Mulled Wine

Mulled Wine

Nathan and I are both optimists by nature but let’s face it…January can be dreary! The holidays are over, the weather is cold (except for the fluke 68 degree day we had last week!), and the days are short. Instead of letting this time of year get you down, fight it with cozy things…comforting meals, warm blankets, kittens, and hot drinks. Wait, scratch the kittens…Nathan is allergic. Let’s just focus on the hot drink. and our recipe for hot mulled wine. It’s the perfect January potable that will warm you from the inside out with flavors of citrus, spice, and apple. Don’t use a quality wine for this…you’ll be amping up the flavor with your own additions. Experiment with the recipe to suit your taste…this mulled wine is hard to mess up but easy to enjoy on a frosty January night.

Most recipes will tell you to use one or two bottles of wine for their recipes but Nathan and I wanted to make a little bit less for just the two of us.  This is a perfect situation for some quality boxed wine so that you can use only as much wine as you want or need.

Mulled Wine:

Ingredients:

Serves 2-4…depending on how cold you are!

16 oz. (2 cups) inexpensive fruity red wine (we used Pinot Noir…from a box!)
½ orange, peeled
½ lemon, peeled
orange and lemon zest, to taste
1 cinnamon stick
8 allspice cloves, whole
8 whole cloves
1 Tbs. honey
1 bay leaf
1.5 oz Apple

Directions:

Combine all ingredients except for apple liqueur in a small saucepan. Simmer over medium-low heat for 10-20 minutes. Remove from heat and add apple liqueur. Pour into glasses and enjoy!

When Katryn and I got married I gladly asked one of my best friends, Weston, to be my best man.  For guys, there is always that moment of panic as the best man prepares to give his speech at the reception and you worry that he may divulge your deepest, darkest secrets in front ofContinue Reading

Red(ish) Thai Chicken Curry

Red(ish) Thai Chicken Curry

One of the best aspects of eating out is getting inspiration for dishes that we want to recreate (and maybe improve upon!) at home. Nathan and I have a great little Thai place around the corner from our apartment that has delicious curries and basil dishes that are worth using for inspiration. The great thingContinue Reading

Mangia La Pizza

Mangia La Pizza

Making pizza brings the little kid out in me because it’s all about playing with your food.  It’s your chance to stick it to your parents for telling you not to play with your food at the table!  Kneading, punching, and stretching dough and then sprinkling whatever your imagination desires and your tastebuds (and stomach)Continue Reading

Ode to the Texas Tavern and the Cheesy Western

Let me tell you about a magical place where I used to eat in my youth. (Ok, I’m only 26 but whatever!) I grew up in a small city called Roanoke, VA where you could find one of the best burger joints in the country, Texas Tavern.  No, seriously George Motz considers it to beContinue Reading
