Prescription Julep

Prescription Julep

I would like to say that we made this drink in honor of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday but in reality we made it as a tasty remedy to a crazy week. We’re both busy at work, it’s been cold and rainy, and we’re having construction done on our house that is proving to be ‘exciting’ and ‘eventful’…two things you probably don’t want any home renovation to be. So this drink, a cocktail that hearkens back to the 1850’s when alcohol was used medicinally, was just what the doctor ordered. Mint Juleps are usually made with bourbon but this recipe actually predates the ubiquitous modern version and uses a mixture of cognac and rye whiskey. I’m not sure why this riff on the Julep isn’t more popular because many, ourselves included, think it’s the tastiest version we’ve tried. If something ails you (or you’ve just had a long week) give this classic home remedy a try!

Prescription Julep:

Based on this recipe

Ingredients

1 1/2 ounces cognac
1/2 ounce rye
3/4 ounce simple syrup
2 dashes orange bitters
5-6 mint leaves

Directions

1. Add mint leaves and simple syrup to a julep tin or rocks glass. Lightly press mint leaves to release oils.
2. Add cognac, rye and orange bitters and stir.
3. Add ice.
4. Garnish with a mint sprig.
5. Enjoy!

Sidecar

Sidecar

Let me introduce my new third favorite cocktail…the Sidecar. It comes, of course, just after the Whiskey sour (my favorite during winter) and the margarita (my favorite during summer.) Which means that yes, the mojito is dropping to fourth place. The reason that the Sidecar is an instant favorite is that it is actually theContinue Reading

Tropical Frose

Tropical Frose

Nathan and I don’t usually follow the hip new food trends…but this post is an exception. I was reading the morning paper on the Metro this past week and came across an article called “Frosé is taking over D.C.” Frosé (frozen Rose) is the hot new thing…several DC restaurants have concocted their own recipes toContinue Reading

Cherry Blossom Cocktail

Cherry Blossom Cocktail

If you really wanted to torture Nathan and I, you would take us to the Washington, D.C. Cherry Blossom festival on a Saturday afternoon. We shudder at the thought of the crowds packed into the tidal basin taking pictures, pedal boating or picnicking with the hordes. We’re perfectly happy celebrating the cherry blossoms in ourContinue Reading

The Gimlet Cocktail

The Gimlet Cocktail

Yes, I know…we’ve been a little MIA recently. Life has been really busy. Between travelling for the holidays, work, and still getting settled into our house, we haven’t been keeping up our usual posting schedule! This weekend we wanted to do something fun and very simple to get back into the swing of things…so whatContinue Reading
