Whiskey Sour

The weekend just doesn’t feel right to us without at least one leisurely happy hour involving a margarita or mojito and a game of scrabble (yeah, yeah, we know we’re dorks). As we’ve mentioned many times, these summery cocktails are our top favorite mixed beverages and we love the limey tartness and slightly sweet refreshment of both drinks. Now that the weather is changing, however (sniff, sniff), we know it’s time to slowly let go of our beloved margaritas and mojitos and renew our search for a fall/winter cocktail to fill the void. Well, I am happy to report that we found a winner that perfectly bridges the gap between summer and fall and is well on its way to becoming our new happy hour staple.

Introducing…. The Whiskey Sour! This is a classic mixed drink containing Bourbon, lemon juice, and simple syrup topped off with half an orange slice and a maraschino cherry. It perfectly fits my cocktail checklist of being light, tart, and slightly sweet, all while not being quite as summery as a tequila or rum based drink. Before tasting this drink I thought I didn’t like the flavor of bourbon….I had just never had bourbon mixed with lemon juice! If you’re like us and are looking for an early fall cocktail to enjoy, try the whiskey sour today!

Whiskey Sour

3 ounces (2 shots) bourbon
1.5 ounces (1 shot) fresh squeezed lemon juice
1 ounce simple syrup
1 egg white (optional – this makes the drink frothy and smooth)
1/2 Orange slice (garnish)
1 maraschino cherry (garnish)

1. Combine all ingredients in drink shaker with ice and shake.

2. Pour through shaker strainer into glass with ice and garnish with orange slice and cherry.

3. Drink.
