Limoncello Basil Margarita

Sometimes it’s the little things that really make a marriage work. For Nathan and I, one of those little things is that we are both easily amused by a fun little game where we combine two words into one mega word. For example, with the words awesome and blog you can make the word Awelog or Blawesome…cool right? (Don’t answer that…we know we’re dorks.)

We decided to apply this concept to two of my favorite cuisines (Italian and Mexican) to make one mind-blowing cocktail…the Limoncello Basil Margarita. The Limonrita or Margarcello, if you will? Nathan had the brilliant idea to replace the Triple Sec that is used in the classic Margarita with the traditional Italian lemon-flavored cordial, Limoncello. The addition of muddled basil gives this Margarita an herby, summery infusion that made us feel like we were sitting on the balcony of a Tuscan villa watching two Mexican luchadores in a wrestling match. A little puzzling but so worth it. This drink might be even better than our plain Margarita (a bold statement, I know!)

Limoncello Basil Margarita:

Ingredients para dos (for two):

6 ounces (4 shots) Tequila
3 ounces (2 shots) fresh squeezed lime juice
1.5 ounces (1 shot) Limoncello
8-10 Fresh basil leaves, muddled

In a cocktail shaker combine all ingredients and shake. Strain into an ice-filled tumbler and garnish with a slice of lime and sprig of basil.

Sounds fascinating, but I just opened my email at work and am still trying to wake up. On the other hand, we do have a new basil plant on our patio…
