If you’ve been following Rampant Cuisine for any length of time you know that our top three mixed drinks are the margarita, the mojito, and the whisky sour (our homemade versions..I can’t speak for the too sweet versions that are often served in restaurants/bars!) I would like to now announce that the caipirinha will be taking the 4th spot on this extremely competitive and discerning list. This may not be too surprising given that we prefer drinks with citrus as witnessed by our top three favorites. The Caipirinha is Brazil’s national cocktail and is made with cachaca (sugar cane hard liquor), sugar and lime. Traditionally, the lime and sugar is muddled and then the liquor is added. We found the drink to be better by squeezing the limes for their juice and then adding simple syrup and cachaca. The cachaca gives the drink a unique and distinctive flavor but it definitely shares the fresh sour sweetness that we love about the mojito and margarita. If you’re having 90 degree weather right now like we are in DC give this light and refreshing drink a try!
